We Shall Be One

Work in progress

Expected completion: January 2018

Keya is twelve when she's ripped from her Oglala Lakota tribe, separated from her sisters and friends, and forced into the Pine Ridge Boarding School to begin her new education. It's the spring of 1891, less than a year after the Wounded Knee Massacre, and the U.S. government has decided that the only way to save the Indians is to civilize their children, like it or not.

Forbia McPhee, the daughter of Scottish immigrants, is driven to South Dakota by her hot temper and one marketable skill: teaching.

When a common tragedy brings the two together as reluctant allies, Keya sees her one chance to escape the school and return to her family, if they are still alive.
